Watercolour Poppy Remembrance Day Card

Remembrance day is a day of reflection and a day that remains relevant today. Unfortunately, wars are still being fought around the world and this card is intended for the loved ones left behind. A simple gesture to say “I am thinking of you, your family, the person lost and will never forget”.

The Watercolour Poppy Remembrance Day Card is a creative way to introduce the topic of Remembrance Day to older children.

Watercolour Poppy Remembrance Day Card – How to

To begin, lightly draw a basic outline of a poppy onto an old page of a book and start painting. Get experimental and try merging different shades of red, pink and orange and don’t worry to much about neatness.

It might also be helpful to mark the parameters of the base card to ensure the poppy fits when transferred.

Once the painting is complete and dry, redefine the basic outline of your poppies with a fine tipped black pen. For those who are more adventurous, you could try doodling (zentangle) within the petals or stem.

Next, cut around your design and ensure you leave enough room to tear some of the edges. This creates a rustic feel, which I think works with this craft. Once you are happy with your picture, simply stick it onto the backing card.

You should now be left with a gorgeous home made card to share.

Craft Ideas for Kids - Funky Yarn Hangers

Funky Yarn Hangers

Little Lovely is four years old and recently started school. Each day she comes home, removes her uniform, drops it on the floor and gets on with more important things, such as playing. What more can I expect? she is only four!! However, I like to encourage independence and like to find creative solutions to little problems.

So here’s the problem: Hanging clothes really isn’t that interesting.

The Solution: Funky Yarn Hangers!

This idea works on many levels. First of all, making Funky Yarn Hangers is a great exercise for fine motor skills. It’s creative and fun, and it really did encourage Little Lovely to hang her clothes up!

We now have a nice little routine in place where little lovely comes home from school, undresses and hangs her clothes up all by herself and does so with enthusiasm! Problem solved.

Funky Yarn Hangers – Materials

A Selection of hangers (recommend thick plastic or wooden hangers)
A range of funky yarn colours
Elastic band or tape

Funky Yarn Hangers – How-to

Step 1

Tie a piece of yarn around the end of the hanger and begin wrapping it around, keeping the yarn tight.

Retrospect is a wonderful thing and if I were to make Funky Yarn Hangers again, I would wrap an elastic band or piece of tape around the ends first to create a small stopper. This will prevent the yarn slipping off during use!

Step 2

When the crafty kids are ready to change colour, simply tie the two ends together with a secure knot and continue wrapping the yarn around the hanger.

This is the time to get creative and we had a blast deciding upon our colour combinations and designs!

Step 3

Once the crafty kids meet the hook section of the plastic hanger (they wouldn’t need to do this with a slim metal hook), they will need to cross the yarn over from side to side to ensure a large gap isn’t left in the middle.

Once the middle section is completely covered, leave a loose piece of yarn and repeat Step 1 and Step 2 with the other side of the hanger.

Step 4

Once the two sides meet, simply tie the loose ends together and tuck them into the remaining exposed gap.

Step 5

To finish off, secure a piece of yarn around the base of the hook and continue wrapping it around the hook until completely covered.

We added a cute ribbon to our final design.
