Origami Swans

I would love to take credit for these gorgeous Origami Swans, but it turns out that crafty Dad has a secret talent! I was amazed at how easy they are to make and so pretty too; perfect for our theme ‘Seven Swans-a-Swimming!’

Each origami swan can be created in 9 folds of a piece of paper – although it can get a little tricky towards the end!

To make it easier, we’ve created a free origami swan printable with all the fold lines highlighted to use alongside this post for your crafty kids to practice with.

1. Using a square piece of paper fold one corner to the opposite corner creating a large triangle. Then unfold this triangle back to the square piece of paper to create a centre line guide that goes from one corner to the opposite corner.

2. Using the other corners fold inwards to the centre line to create a kite shape.

3. Turn the paper over and fold the kite flaps in half the way to the centre line.

4. Fold these over again up to the centre line to create an arrow looking paper plane.

5. Create the body of the swan by folding the pointy end towards the back – do this just over half way so the pointy end sticks out past the body when folded.

6. Fold the end of the point back on itself – creating the swans head and beak.

7. Grip the body of the swan with your thumb and index finger just under the swans neck and then pull the neck forward to stand it up. This should cause the body and wings to be upright, rather than flat.

8. Again using your thumb and index finger, grip the other end of the body of the swan and gently push the wings out from the body.

And there you have it – Origami Swans!

The smaller the square of paper you use, the more delicate and lovely the origami swans will look.
